FIA WTCC (2005-2017)

Post by Pinkd56 »

I loved the WTCC when it was on, and I have rewatched a few of the races over the last couple of years (thanks COVID)

A race/moment I will always point to as being one of my favourites is Race Two from the 2007 WTCC Race of Sweden at Anderstorp - simply for the shithousery from Rickard Rydell on a guest appearance for Chevrolet.

Heading into the final lap - Larini, Menu and Rydell complete the top three for Chevrolet on a drying circuit. Rydell is at the back of the train on slicks - effectively positioned to be rear gunner against the other cars (who are miles away). In his infinite wisdom, he decides to pass Menu on the back straight before pressuring Larini into a mistake and costing the Italian his chance at his first WTCC win. The points 'stolen' by Rydell cost Larini and Menu fourth and fifth in the World Championship at the end of the year. Oh, and Rydell turned up at the season finale - this time to help out SEAT

I feel this is a truly unsung touring car moment, as it took place in a series which unfortunately didn't ever get the praise it deserved.
